Queen of Sorcery

(from the back cover) Legends tell of how the evil god Torak had coveted the power of the Orb of Aldur, until defeated in a final battle.

But prophecy spoke of a time when he would awake and again seek dominance over all the world. Now the Orb had been stolen by a priest of Torak, and that [the] time was at hand.

The master Sorcerer Belgarath and his daughter Polgara the arch-sorceress were on the trail of the Orb, seeking to regain it before the final disaster. Snd with them went Garion, a somple farm boy only months before, but now in the focus of the struggle. He had never believed in sorcery and wanted no part of it. Yet with every league they travelled, the power grew in him, forcing him to acts of wizardry he could not accept.

I enjoyed this second book in the Belgariad. Now that I was into the swing of the story, this book feels like a continuing epsiode, I rather liked the ending: it had that "to be continued" feel, but luckily though - I don't have to wait for next season, all I have to do it track down the next book ;)

This book I guess had a little bit of that rebel-teen feel to it: Garion getting a bit sick of being pushed around, and finally lets loose at his elders like any normal teenager. He also discovers that he too like Polgara and Belgarath has the ability to do sorcerous acts. However, Garion doesn't want to accept these new-found powers, as he feels that in doing so, he'll lose part of his humanity and become a cold-hearted monster.

These feelings are brought on by his revenge upon the Murgo/Grolim (the bad guys) that killed his parents. Garion incinerated him with his will. Instead of a feeling of justice or satisfaction, Garion cannot help but feel that his actions were wrong and that his powers are dangerous.

This leads to the inevitable confrontation with his Aunt Pol (Polgara) and the fur really flies!

Along with the continuing pursuit of the Orb, more people join the quest, including Garion's "love interest" (in the coming novels) Ce'Nedra princess of Tolnedra. A little spoiled, not quite human (part Dryad - read the story), strongwilled and quite the match for our young hero.

Looks like I have to get the next book tomorrow. This series has a good feeling about it...
